CDA Subject Area 1: Planning a safe and healthy learning environment

This 10-hour course equips child care providers with essential knowledge to safeguard young children. Learn how to create secure indoor and outdoor spaces, prevent injuries, and promote healthy development. Gain expertise in child nutrition, safe sleep practices, and managing illnesses. Understand the importance of appropriate supervision, material selection, and room arrangement to foster learning and growth. B. Objectives / Learning Outcomes:
By the end of this training, the learner will be able to:
  1. Demonstrate an understanding of how appropriate material and equipment promotes play.
  2. Demonstrate an understanding of how available materials and equipment guide activity development
  3. Describe how materials, equipment, environment, and staff meet the individual needs for children
  4. Demonstrate an understanding of how ongoing preventive health and wellness care affects child development
  5. Demonstrate an understanding of how play promotes development.
  6. Demonstrates understanding of the importance of room arrangement/environment.
  7. Demonstrate an understanding of how to provide an environment that offers choices.
  8. Identify the importance of child nutrition and nutrition training for staff in childcare.
  9. Identify strategies for providing appropriate care for infants and toddlers with chronic health issues
  10. Identify practices for managing Illnesses, diseases, allergies, and medication in child care.
  11. Distinguish appropriate outdoor safety concerns
  12. Define shaken baby syndrome and abusive head trauma
  13. Identify safe practices in the prevention of and response to food and other allergies in the childcare environment.
  14. Define Building and Physical Premises Safety.
  15. Demonstrate understanding of the harmful effects of excessive sun exposure in infants and young children.
  16. Explain appropriate crib guidelines for caregivers to ensure safe sleep for infants and young toddlers.
  17. Demonstrate an understanding of how to keep children safe while in vehicles and school buses.
  18. Demonstrate Understanding of Meal Planning for young children.
  19. Distinguish appropriate indoor safety concerns
  20. Identify strategies in promoting sound health and safety principles for in child care.
  21. Identify strategies to ensure appropriate supervision.
Criteria to earn CEUs:
Certificates are awarded when the following criteria have been met by the learner:
  1. Class has been paid in full
  2. All material has been reviewed
  3. All review questions and final test have been completed with a passing score of 80% or higher.
Learning Assessment Method:
Learners will be assessed through questions after every section is completed. Learners will not be allowed to proceed to the next section of the training until all questions have been answered correctly. Learners will be presented with a final test composed of true/false and multiple choice questions. Upon successful completion of the training, learners will receive their certificate by email.

Learning Methodology:
Online material will be presented in the form of slides, accompanied with speech. Videos will be used to demonstrate ideas and concepts. Charts and tables will be used for illustration.

Logistics/Required Technology:
A stable internet connection is required for the completion of this course. Users are highly encouraged to take their online course on Google Chrome on either a laptop or desktop computer. Speakers and/or headphones are also required to hear speech.
