Georgia child care providers play a vital role in ensuring the safety, health, and development of young children. This state-approved training equips caregivers with essential knowledge on child development principles, including Jean Piaget’s cognitive stages, social-emotional growth, language and literacy support, and the importance of active play in early learning. Participants will also learn crucial health and safety practices, such as safe sleep strategies, infectious disease prevention, emergency preparedness, medication administration, allergy safety, and child abuse recognition and reporting. Additionally, the course covers regulatory guidelines for playgrounds, water safety, transportation, and biohazard management to create a secure childcare environment. This training fulfills the Georgia DECAL requirement that all CCLC and FCCLH staff with direct care responsibilities complete at least 10 State-approved hours of Health & Safety Orientation training within the first 90 days of employment.

B. Objectives / Learning Outcomes:
By the end of this training, the learner will be able to:
  1. Demonstrate knowledge of appropriate child abuse reporting process
  2. Identify regulations as it pertains to the physical plant, playground, and water safety guidelines.
  3. Describe the proper procedures of medication administration including: authorizations forms, documentation, storage, training, emergent issues, and resources.
  4. Demonstrate an understanding of how play promotes development.
  5. Demonstrate an understanding of utilizing the GELDS as a framework for growth and development
  6. Identify strategies for the prevention and control of infectious diseases (including immunization)
  7. Identify the signs of abuse and neglect.
  8. Identify safe practices in the prevention of and response to food and other allergies in the childcare environment.
  9. Identify strategies to support language and literacy development in early childhood.
  10. Identify ways to handle hazards and bio-contaminants
  11. Give examples of strategies caregivers can use to ensure safe sleeping habits and the prevention of SIDS/SUIDS in infants.
  12. Give examples of strategies to prevent traumatic brain injuries in infants and young children.
  13. Define strategies for the safe transportation of children.
  14. Identify Jean Piaget's stages of cognitive development.
  15. Demonstrate an understanding of response planning for natural disasters and human-caused events
  16. Demonstrate an understanding of developing and implementing a comprehensive Emergency Preparedness Plan.
  17. Recognize the signs and prevention of shaken baby syndrome and abusive head trauma.
  18. Define social emotional development in young children
  19. Define active play in the early childhood classroom and describe its benefits for young children.
Criteria to earn CEUs:
Certificates are awarded when the following criteria have been met by the learner:
  1. Class has been paid in full
  2. All material has been reviewed
  3. All review questions and final test have been completed with a passing score of 80% or higher.
Learning Assessment Method:
Learners will be assessed through questions after every section is completed. Learners will not be allowed to proceed to the next section of the training until all questions have been answered correctly. Learners will be presented with a final test composed of true/false and multiple choice questions. Upon successful completion of the training, learners will receive their certificate by email.
Learning Methodology:
Online material will be presented in the form of slides, accompanied with speech. Videos will be used to demonstrate ideas and concepts. Charts and tables will be used for illustration.
Logistics/Required Technology:
A stable internet connection is required for the completion of this course. Users are highly encouraged to take their online course on Google Chrome on either a laptop or desktop computer. Speakers and/or headphones are also required to hear speech.
