ChildCareEd courses may be used to fulfill ongoing professional learning requirements for providers in Quebec. ChildCareEd is an IACET accredited organization that provides CEUs for all of our online self-paced training courses.

The following are the education requirements for providers in Quebec.

In Quebec, the Ministère de la Famille (Ministry of the Family) establishes the education and training requirements for child care personnel working in child care facilities. The specific regulations are outlined in the Educational Childcare Act and the Regulation respecting childcare services.

Certified Educators (Éducateurs/trices qualifiés)

  • Diploma of College Studies (DCS) in Early Childhood Education (AEC/DEC): To be considered a qualified educator, individuals must typically have a Diploma of College Studies in Early Childhood Education (DEC) or an Attestation of College Studies (AEC) in Early Childhood Care and Education.
  • First Aid Certification: All certified educators must have a valid first aid certificate, including CPR training for children and infants.
  • Additional Training: Some positions may require additional specialized training, particularly in working with specific age groups (infants, toddlers, preschoolers) or children with special needs.

Unqualified Educators

  • Unqualified educators can work in child care facilities, but they must work under the supervision of certified staff. These individuals typically do not need specific formal education in early childhood care but may be required to complete basic training in child care or first aid.
  • Ongoing Training: Unqualified educators are often required to complete a set number of training hours each year to improve their knowledge of early childhood care and education.

Family Child Care Providers (Recognized by a Coordinating Office)

  • Family child care providers must complete at least 45 hours of training in early childhood care, which includes safety, child development, and educational activities. This training is mandatory before they can be recognized by a coordinating office.
  • Providers must also hold a valid first aid and CPR certification.
  1. Administrators of Child Care Centers
  • Bachelor's Degree in a Related Field: Administrators typically need at least a Bachelor's degree in a relevant field (e.g., early childhood education, social work, or management).
  • Ongoing Professional Development: Administrators are often required to continue their professional development through additional courses and certifications.
