ChildCareEd courses may be used to fulfill ongoing professional learning requirements for providers in Manitoba. ChildCareEd is an IACET accredited organization that provides CEUs for all of our online self-paced training courses.

To work as an employee in a licensed child care facility in Manitoba, you must have a classification certificate issued by the government.

Education and training requirements for child care providers in Manitoba are established under the Community Child Care Standards Act.

There are three levels in Manitoba:

  • Child Care Assistant (CCA) Certificate:
  • Qualifications: A high school diploma is required. The CCA is not required to have formal early childhood education (ECE) training but must complete a 40-hour introductory course in child care within the first year of employment.
  • Early Childhood Educator (ECE) II Certificate:
  • Qualifications: This classification requires completion of a two-year diploma program in early childhood education from a recognized institution. The individual must demonstrate competencies in planning, implementing, and evaluating developmentally appropriate programs for children.
  • Early Childhood Educator (ECE) III Certificate:
  • Qualifications: ECE III certification requires further training beyond the ECE II level. This typically includes a post-diploma specialization, such as in child development, administration, or another related area of early childhood education

Licensed family home-based child care providers do not require classification. However within the first year of employment, all Child Care Assistants and licensed family home-based child care providers are required to complete the Forty Hour course related to early learning and child care.

Professional Development: All child care providers are encouraged to participate in at least 24 hours of professional development annually.

Specialized Training for Children with Disabilities: If providers care for children with special needs, they must receive specific training in promoting inclusive play and develop individual plans (IPs) for each child.

Emergency Procedures: Providers must be trained in emergency procedures, including handling medical emergencies and creating individual emergency plans for the children in their care.

First Aid and CPR Certification: All child care providers must complete a first aid course, including CPR training, relevant to the age group of children they care for.
