ChildCareEd courses may be used to fulfill ongoing professional learning requirements for providers on Prince Edward Island. ChildCareEd is an IACET accredited organization that provides CEUs for all of our online self-paced training courses.

On Prince Edward Island, child care providers must meet specific education and training requirements as outlined in the Early Learning and Child Care Act and its regulations.

Certification Levels: There are different levels of certification based on the type of care being provided:

  • Family Home Child Care Provider: Must complete a 30-hour course related to the care and education of infants and preschoolers.
  • School-Age Child Care Provider: Must complete a 30-hour course related to the care and education of school-age children.
  • Early Childhood Intern: Requires a 30-hour course in child growth and development, child guidance, and early childhood pedagogy.
  • Early Childhood Associate: Requires the completion of a one-year certificate program in early childhood care and education or a diploma/degree in a related field.
  • Early Childhood Educator: Must complete a two-year diploma in early childhood care and education or an equivalent degree program.

Renewal of Certification: Certified individuals must complete 45 hours of continuing education approved by the Board every three years to renew their certification.

Staff Qualifications: All staff members at licensed centers must be at least 18 years old, have criminal record checks, and provide proof of First Aid and CPR certification within eight weeks of starting work.

Ongoing Training: To maintain certification, child care providers must complete continued professional development.

  • Instructor-Led: Unlimited online training, plus all CDA online training courses, and one Virtual Class each month led by a trained Educational Specialist
