ChildCareEd courses may be used to fulfill ongoing professional learning requirements for providers in Nova Scotia. ChildCareEd is an IACET accredited organization that provides CEUs for all of our online self-paced training courses.

In Nova Scotia, child care providers working in regulated child care programs, family home day care agencies, or pre-primary programs must obtain classification through the Department of Education and Early Childhood Development. The classifications are regulated under the Day Care Act and Regulations, with distinct education and training requirements:

Entry-Level Classification:

  • Completion of the Orientation for Staff Working in Licensed Child Care Facilities, or
  • Post-secondary courses comparable to the orientation.

Level 1 Classification:

  • Completion of the Orientation for Staff and additional coursework/training set by the Minister, or
  • A post-secondary certificate in early childhood education.

Level 2 Classification:

  • A diploma in early childhood education from an approved institution, or
  • Completion of the Recognition of Prior Learning program.

Level 3 Classification:

  • A bachelor’s degree in early childhood education or a related field, or
  • Level 2 qualifications and a bachelor’s degree.

School-Age Training Approval:

  • Completion of the Orientation for Staff and either a bachelor’s degree in early or elementary education or a post-secondary credential for school-age programming.

Professional Development:

  • Child care providers must complete 30 hours of professional development every three years to maintain their classification. A record of continuing professional development must be submitted to Classification Services six weeks before the due date to avoid cancellation of the classification.
