ChildCareEd courses may be used to fulfill certification renewal requirements for BC Early Childhood Educators. ChildCareEd is an IACET accredited organization that provides CEUs for all of our online self-paced training courses.

The following are the education requirements for providers in British Columbia.

To work as an ECE or ECE Assistant in a licensed child care facility in B.C. you must be certified by the ECE Registry.

In British Columbia, the education and training requirements for individuals working in child care are outlined in the Child Care Licensing Regulation under the Community Care and Assisted Living Act (B.C. Reg. 332/2007). 

Early Childhood Educator (ECE) Certificate:

  • Individuals must complete a recognized basic early childhood education program.
  • A minimum of 500 hours of relevant work experience is required within the past five years.

Special Needs and Infant/Toddler Educator Certificates:

  • Additional certification is required for working with special needs children or infants/toddlers. Applicants must complete specialized training programs through recognized institutions and demonstrate experience and skills relevant to these roles.

Early Childhood Educator Assistant Certificate:

  • To work as an assistant, individuals must complete at least one course in child development, guidance, or child health, safety, and nutrition from a recognized institution.

Responsible Adults:

  • Must be at least 19 years old and able to provide care and mature guidance to children.
  • They need to complete at least 20 hours of courses in child development, guidance, health, or nutrition and have relevant work experience.

Renewal of Certificates:

  • Early childhood educator certificates are valid for five years and require proof of continuing professional development (at least 40 hours) and relevant work experience (400 hours) for renewal.

Individuals in British Columbia can obtain education and training for working in child care from recognized educational institutions and programs approved by the Early Childhood Educator (ECE) Registry.

  • Public and Private Colleges/Universities
  • Online Training Programs
  • Child Care Resource and Referral Centres (CCRR)
  • Private Institutions Recognized by the ECE Registry

Continuing Professional Development:

Professionals already working in the field can pursue workshops and professional development courses to maintain and upgrade their skills. These may be offered through child care organizations, professional associations, and other training providers.

  • Instructor-Led: Unlimited online training, plus all CDA online training courses, and one Virtual Class each month led by a trained Educational Specialist
