Kick-off Summer with some Memorial Day Activities
Read a story about Memorial Day. Explain to the children what the day is for: to honor and remember those who died fighting for our country. Many children know of someone who is currently serving in the military right now.
Make Fruit Flags. Cooking with children helps develop their math skills and helps them to learn how to follow directions. It also allows for discussion on healthy eating. Preschoolers can make their own Fruit Flags using strawberries, blueberries, graham crackers, and vanilla yogurt.
American Flags. Make an American flag using construction paper or simply have children draw their best American flag on paper. Staple the completed flags onto straws for flying. This is a great activity for patterning and counting skills.
Child care providers can incorporate important events into the curriculum by adding skill development to every activity.
