SIDS: Saving Babies: A Change of Position, A Change in Tradition

SIDS is the sudden unexplained death of an infant under one year of age.

SIDS most often strikes when infants are sleeping and as such is also known as “crib death”.

Losing a child is a devastating tragedy, especially if it is preventable. About 2,300 babies in the United States die of SIDS each year, and some of those deaths occur in childcare programs. We created SIDS: Saving Babies: A Change of Position, A Change in Tradition to inform all childcare providers about safe sleep requirements and practices in an effort to save our most vulnerable.

By the end of this training, the learner will be able to:

  • Describe common myths and facts about safe sleep for infants and young toddlers.
  • Explain appropriate crib guidelines for caregivers to ensure safe sleep for infants and young toddlers.
  • Give examples of strategies caregivers can use to ensure safe sleeping habits and the prevention of SIDS/SUIDS in infants.

This training can be used in many states to fulfill federal Block Grant requirements for providers caring for children younger than 24 months old.
