Celebrate the joy of reading and Dr.Seuss’ birthday with National Read Across America Day. This is a fun opportunity to spend the week leading up to Dr.Seuss’ Birthday to read a Dr.Seuss book each day and make that book the day’s theme.

For example:

  • Read Green Eggs and Ham.
  • Have children help make green eggs and ham for a snack.
  • Have children design their own book cover for Green Eggs and Ham.
  • Provide lots of Dr.Seuss books in all areas of the classroom.
  • Ask children what they notice about the words in Dr.Seuss’ books. Do the words sound the same? Do we know what rhyming words are? Let's think of our own rhyming words.

When Read Across America comes around, invite families to stop in throughout the day to read a story to the class. Ask older children to read a book to younger children. Have discussions about your favorite books. Offer books on tape that children can listen to throughout the day. Take this time to encourage children’s love of books and reading.

While promoting reading is important on this day, these are things that should be happening all throughout the year. Take this as an opportunity to introduce new ways to continue to support children’s language and literacy.
